Sometimes after long days of gourmet cooking, you may notice that those wonderful aromas of onions and garlic that worked so well in the kitchen, don’t work so well in your carpets or on your furniture. But, before you give a call to your local Upholstery Cleaner, there are a few things you can try on your own.

White vinegar is an excellent odor remover and is very simple to use. Simply dilute 50 parts white vinegar to 50% warm water and spray on your sofas, chairs and carpets. Yes, things will smell like vinegar for a short time, but once it dries the smell, along with the other odors, will eventually dissipate.

Anther solution that works for strong odors, or just as a general fabric refresher is water, vodka and lavender. Mixing 2 parts water, one part vodka and just a few drops of authentic lavender oil, you will have a wonderfully aromatic room with no chemical residue.

If the odors persist, a visit from your local Upholstery Cleaner may be in order. Chances are, a good high-pressure steaming will do the trick, but in certain instances an odor neutralizer is required. There are a few reliable and trustworthy, Green Home Carpet Cleaners so if bringing chemicals into your home is an issue for you, it’s best to stick with them.

Upholstered furniture receives almost constant use. We sit on it, lounge on it and put our feet on the fabric, let the pets lay on it, and the kids play on it. Dust and pet hair settle into the cracks and corners, and the daily wear and tear can really start to show. It’s possible to keep your upholstery looking tidy, but like many other features in your home, it benefits from regular professional deep cleaning. Don’t let the “dry clean only” tags deter you; getting your upholstered furniture thoroughly clean is easier than you think!

Labels Can Be Misleading

Though upholstered furniture often comes with labels that recommend dry cleaning, very few types of fabric furniture actually must be dry cleaned. Upholstery manufacturers frequently recommend dry cleaning for two reasons. The first reason is to protect themselves from any liability. After all, the dry cleaning method poses low risk of damage to the fabric. The second reason is because it’s easy. Upholstery is often made of varied fibers and materials, so it’s also easier to just recommend dry cleaning, rather than do the necessary research for the various fibers and devise an appropriate cleaning regimen for the individual piece of furniture. Of course there are rare cases of upholstered furniture that truly does require dry cleaning. In these cases, a highly trained professional upholstery cleaner should assess the furniture and make the decision.

Benefits Of Extraction Cleaning

The most thorough cleaning your upholstered furniture can receive is through the hot water extraction method, or steam cleaning. In this process, a mixture of hot water and cleaning solution is injected into your furniture and then immediately suctioned out, taking with it the dirt and grime that has built up in the fibers and backing of the fabric. Trained upholstery cleaners specialize in devising the best cleaning formula for each individual piece of furniture. This means selecting the perfect water temperature, pH level, cleaning solution formula, and dwell time in order to ensure your furniture is truly getting deep cleaned. Too often a piece of upholstered furniture that would benefit from extraction cleaning is fitted with a “dry clean only” label. Furniture that should receive extraction cleaning but instead receives dry cleaning will never be as clean as it could be. If you’re unsure about the type of cleaning that is right for your furniture, find the best professional upholstery cleaning service and leave it to the expertise of the professionals. A trained and Wiz Clean technician will make sure your furniture is being cleaned properly and effectively.

Whether you think your upholstery needs to be steam cleaned or dry cleaned, don’t play the guessing game. It can be risky to apply sprays and solutions to your fabric furniture, and certainly a gamble to rent expensive steam cleaning or dry cleaning equipment and attempt to clean your upholstered furniture yourself. Trust the upholstery cleaning professionals to make good decisions for your furniture and to take great care in cleaning it.

While having your building’s common areas, public and private bathrooms, and staff break rooms cleaned on a regular basis should be a standard element on your professional cleaning service’s plan of action for your facility, there’s a whole other necessary (and often overlooked) component that must be on that “to do” list as well: upholstery cleaning services.  Whether you have your current cleaning service provide this specific niche area of cleaning, or you hire a company purposefully for this one service, there are lots of benefits to including upholstery cleaning in your budget:

It will revitalize the appearance of your furniture.

If you’ve never had your furniture taken care of by professional cleaning services before, it’s understandable that it’s hard to imagine how all those dirty upholstered chairs and couches at your facility can possibly look revitalized without having to cover them or reupholster them — but that’s exactly the benefit of upholstery cleaning services. The process removes the dirt, smudges, juice spills, shoe marks, hair products, and all the other spots and spills your furniture has endured from the countless visitors, residents, and/or employees that have sought comfort on them!

It will increase customer satisfaction.

Investing in upholstery cleaning services shows your staff, visitors, and residents that it’s important to you not only that you take pride in your facility and that their comfort and safety matters, but also that you make sound business decisions, handle the facility’s finances wisely, and appreciate and value things that simply need to be taken care of rather than quickly discarded. Can you imagine the negative image you would be portraying if you displayed new furniture at your facility every season? It would be just as bad as if you were completely neglecting cleaning the facility altogether.

It’s cost effective.

While initially it may seem quicker and easier to buy new office furniture to replace pieces that look dirty and worn from wear, it’s also more expensive than simply securing cleaning services to revitalize those pieces. In fact, just one session of professional upholstery cleaning services can cost just a small fraction of replacing the furniture altogether. Buying new furniture every time your old ones become dirty is not practical; that portion of your budget can be better spent elsewhere at your facility.

The furniture will last longer.

Dust particles can be full of microscopic animal dander, dirt, insect waste, and dry skin that slowly damages upholstery fibers.  If your facility’s furniture is not well-maintained, it will be visible to the naked eye over time. Just like with anything you value in life — a vehicle, a home, a pet, a loved-one, the more attentive you are to it, the more you take care of it, and the more you invest in its well-being, and the longer it will be enjoyed and embraced.

It will remove allergens.

From open windows, room deodorizers, dust, and oils and perfumes, to the dog hair left behind from someone’s jacket, allergens are ever-present in the air and on upholstered furniture. Professional upholstery cleaning will reduce and remove those agents that can cause subtle or severe physical reactions to people sensitive to them.

 Key Take-a-ways:

  • Upholstery cleaning services address those areas of ongoing facility maintenance that is often overlooked at buildings where others live, work, and/or visit daily.
  • There are many benefits to implementing cleaning services into your building maintenance budget, including:
  • the financial savings,
  • an overall revitalized appearance of your building’s furnishings,
  • an increase in customer service and satisfaction,
  • the sustainability and longevity of your company’s capital assets, and
  • the removal of potentially-dangerous allergens.

Dirty upholstery can also be a source of bad odors. But never fear, Wizclean can sweep in to take care of your upholstery cleaning woes

We all love our homes we live in and want to keep them looking nice and new for as long as possible. And we know that in order to do this we need to be prepared to invest in routine maintenance that will that will prolong the life of the belongings in one’s home. Most of this is common sense, such as having a air ducts cleaned to keeper air conditioning and heating system working to its full effectiveness. For painting the outside of one’s home in order to help protect it from whether and wind and water damage. Sometimes when it comes to the inside of one’s home, We often forget to do things that are also very common sense that can help prolong the life of our furniture for example we often do not think that we need to have our upholstery professionally cleaned the way we would all carpets. However the upholstery furniture in your home often sees more use and mileage then any other piece of furniture in your home, including your bed! This is because your upholstery furniture is used by many people other than yourself, it is often exposed to food and drinks billing as well as the dirt and grime that comes from your clothes and shoes and the simple wear and tear that becomes in the contacts from your household pets and children. It may surprise you to know that many people do not even regularly vacuum their upholstery furniture let alone have it professionally cleaned, And this is a mistake. The reason this is a mistake is because any fibrous material in your home is a breeding ground for bacteria, dust, dirt and allergens that can affect your overall well-being and damage your health. In addition to that regular maintenance and cleaning of your upholstery furniture will prolong it’s life and keep it looking new and nice much longer.

If your clients, customers, or patients hesitate to sit down on the furniture in your lobby or waiting room, it may be time to have your upholstery professionally cleaned by The Wiz Clean team. Wear and tear from everyday use can turn the upholstered couches and chairs in your lobby, waiting room, conference room and other spaces into eye sores.

Unlike the furniture in our homes, upholstered couches and chairs in busy offices and other commercial settings see extreme levels of daily use. This heavy use can cause significant soiling plus harsh wear and tear. While it’s crucial to conduct routine cleaning and maintenance on your upholstered furniture, thorough professional cleaning is necessary to maintain its look and feel and lengthen its lifespan. Clean upholstery is also much more sanitary and holds fewer allergens such as dander, dirt, dust mites, and pollen.

Furniture and fabric manufacturers recommend that consumers not wait to have their upholstery cleaned until severe soiling occurs. The greater the soiling, the harder it is to restore its original color, appearance, and texture. Commercial upholstery should be cleaned at least once a year by a professional cleaning service. If the upholstery sees extensive heavy use, semi-annual cleaning by the pros makes good sense.

The increased life of the upholstery will pay for the cost of cleaning. Plus, clean upholstery sends the message to your clients, patients, vendors and employees that you are successful and care about them and the overall environment of your business. Upholstered furniture that’s dirty, sticky, stained and smelly sends the opposite message.

At Wiz Clean, we have the knowledge, experience, and proper equipment to keep your upholstery looking and smelling fresh and new. Our multi-step process includes vacuuming, spot-treating, shampooing and frame cleaning.

Because it is sturdy, absorbent, easily dyed, soft and comfortable to touch, cotton is a popular choice for clothing and upholstery.

Cotton Clothing vs. Cotton Upholstery

Cotton upholstery is very different from your cotton T-shirt. In upholstery, cotton may be blended with other fibers that have different characteristics and dye systems. Often the fabric is made up of multiple layers and can be quite thick.

Like your clothing, all upholstery – including cotton – must be cleaned periodically for appearance and health. Furniture manufacturers recommend cleaning your upholstery every 12-24 months.

Cotton-Based Upholstery: Cleaning Challenges

Unlike cotton clothing, which in most cases can be washed without major problems, you have to be very careful when cleaning your cotton upholstery. This creates challenges when cleaning.

  1. The thickness of cotton-based upholstery can lead to ripples and distortion to the fabric texture when cleaned by an inexperienced upholstery cleaning company.
  2. Second, while most cotton clothing is designed to be washed in the laundry with lots of water, detergents and agitation, upholstery fabric is not. Lighter colored cotton upholstery may turn brown or yellow as the cellulose material in the cotton breaks down. Dyes may bleed or run. With some cleaning agents, cotton fabrics can actually degrade and become weak or even split.
  3. There is also the potential that the fabric will shrink. This leads to cushion covers not fitting properly, skirts and dust ruffles curling or wrinkling and other similar problems. That’s why you should never remove cushion covers to launder them.

A Few Upholstery Cleaning Guidelines

Most cotton-based upholstery fabrics can be cleaned safely with the right equipment, cleaning agents and proper training. Follow these guidelines to get the best results.

  1. Test
Before we start cleaning, we routinely to test the fabric for dye stability, browning and potential shrinkage, as well as inspect for other possible issues.
  2. Be Gentle
In addition to low moisture and controlled pH, some upholstery fabrics require the gentle hand of an experienced upholstery cleaning technician to avoid damage.
  3. Protect your Investment
A fabric protector application should follow every cleaning to keep the fabric cleaner longer and help resist permanent staining.

Getting a stain on your couch, carpet or clothing can be extremely frustrating and difficult to remove. Sometimes those pesky stains call for unconventional cleaning methods. The following are some tips and tricks for removing some of the most difficult stains from your upholstery or other fabric surface.

  • Blood
    • If the stain is still wet, soak in cold water immediately and then thoroughly rub the stain with a bar of soap. If the stain is dried, spray with a stain removal solution and allow it to soak in. Once you have treated the wet or dry stain, apply a small amount of diluted ammonia to the area. Wash the fabric in your washing machine with an enzyme-based laundry detergent. If the stain is still not lifted after 1 wash, do not put the fabric in the dryer because heat forces stains to set in.
      • Tip – A common stain removal for blood is a mixture of equal parts cold water and meat tenderizer.
  • Chewing Gum
    • Freeze the gum by placing ice cubes on it. This makes removal much easier. Once hardened, scrape off the gum. Wipe down with a warm, soapy towel (or stain remover for fabrics), rinse off the spot and dry.
  • Chocolate
    • Remove all excess chocolate, flush with club soda and then apply stain removal to spot. Remember – chocolate can sometimes leave an oil stain behind so be mindful of this possibility while waiting for the spot to dry.
  • Coffee
    • Blot off all excess coffee. Saturate the fabric with white vinegar and rinse the item with cold water. Dry and repeat steps as needed.
  • Cosmetics / Lipstick
    • The cleaning solutions will vary based on the type of makeup you are trying to clean
      • Lipstick – rubbing alcohol
      • Mascara or eyeliner – dishwashing soap
      • Liquid Foundation – Hydrogen peroxide
      • Blush, eye shadow, powdered foundation – mild laundry detergent
    • First wipe the spot with a dry paper towel and then apply specific cleaning solution to the stain. The best way to scrub the stain is with a nail brush or toothbrush in a circular motion. Allow for the spot to air dry and repeat as needed.
      • Tip – Blotting a minor stain with a baby wipe immediately after it happens may be all you need to remove the spot.
  • Crayons
    • Place an absorbent material like a towel on the stain and gently press the tip of a warm iron on the material. Continue to move the cloth around so the stain is always being absorbed by a clean area of the towel. If the stain still exists, sponge the spot with a dry cleaning solvent.
  • Fruit Juices
    • Mix 1 tablespoon of dish washing detergents and 2 cups of cool water (or 2 cups of warm water for carpet stains) and blot up the stain with a sponge or cloth until the stain disappears. If the fabric is washable, you can then proceed to wash it as normal.
  • Grass
    • Use a solution that is equal parts water and rubbing alcohol. If the fabric is white, bleach may be all you need to do the trick. if possible, soak the fabric in a solution of water and laundry detergent before actually washing it.
  • Gravy
    • Sprinkle baking soda, corn starch or another stain-removal absorbent on the stain and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Remove excess powder (vacuum if dealing with carpet or upholstery) and blot with a dry-cleaning solvent until the spot disappears.
  • Grease / Oil
    • Cover the stain in baby powder or cornstarch and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Carefully remove the powder so it doesn’t get anywhere else on the fabric. Place a few drops of dish washing liquid use a toothbrush or small brush to rub the stain with water in a circular motion. Continue until stain is gone and allow the fabric to air dry.
  • Ink
    • Surprisingly enough, hairspray or sanitizer can do the trick! Apply whichever substance to the stain and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Then, continue to wash normally with hot water.
  • Mustard
    • Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid hand dish washing soap with 2 cups of cool water (or 2 cups of warm water for the carpet) and scrub with a sponge or cloth until the stain disappears.
  • Pets / Pet Odor
    • Clothing, Sheets, Towels, etc: Machine wash the materials as usual but include a one-pound box of your usual detergent to the wash. If the smell or stain is still present, repeat until it’s gone. Allow the material to air dry once clean.
    • Carpet and Upholstery: If a reputable carpet stain remover isn’t enough to remove the stain, use a wet vac – not a steam cleaner. Apply a pet odor neutralizer once the area is completely clean.
  • Red Wine
    • Blot, do not scrub, any excess wine working from the outside of the stain to the center. Sprinkle salt completely over the stain, allow the salt to dry and scrape it off. Rinse the spot with club soda or a mixture of equal parts dish washing soap and hydrogen peroxide. If you are cleaning immediately after a stain occurs, you can try cleaning the spot with a white wine.
  • Sweat
    • Crush up 3 aspirin pills and mix the powder with a half cup of warm water. Put the stained clothing/material in the solution and allow to soak for 2-3 hours then wash normally.
  • Tea
    • First clean the spot with cool water but be careful not to spread the stain. Then proceed to blot the stain with a white vinegar/water solution and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Gently rub the stain with cold water.

 Area Preparation

We will prepare the area where the upholstery will be cleaned. Our technicians will place “leak proof” drop cloths to protect your surrounding furnishings and flooring to avoid any accidents.

Pre-Vacuum

All textiles will be vacuumed thoroughly before cleaning. This step will remove dry soils and any loose particles from the fabric.

 Pre-Treat

Depending on your fabric, a special solution designed for the fabric type and soiling condition will be applied to “emulsify” the soil.

Pre-Spot

Any potentially difficult spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of removal.

Pre-Groom

The fabric will then be gently groomed using soft upholstery brushes to loosen the soil.

Soil Extraction and Rinse

The soil is then extracted from the fabric with a gentle, controlled rinse using a low moisture system.

Neutralize

The fabric is then pH balanced to maintain its soft, fresh feel as well as to prevent any potential color bleed.

Post Spot

Any remaining spots will be treated with special stain removal products.

Post Groom and Protect

The upholstery will then be prepared for drying with a gentle combing of the fabric. Butcher paper will be placed under the cushions (if applicable) to prevent any color transfer.

Speed Dry

High velocity professional air movers will be placed to speed dry the fabric.

 Post Cleaning Inspection

Our technician will review the cleaning results with you to insure that your expectations have been met or exceeded.
