Not All Home Conditions Are Similar

Since all home and business conditions are different, it is impossible to generalize just how often air duct system cleaning should be performed. The rule of thumb – Cleaning should take place every two to three years or after any major construction. If you aren’t sure whether your Air Duct System needs to be cleaned, we can help! Call Wiz Team in Illinois (IL) today! All Air Duct System’s should be inspected by a reputable, certified Air Duct Cleaning professional.

Just by everyday normal use of your home or business, a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants are created. Your air duct system acts as the respiratory system of your home or business, continually re-circulating the air on average 5 to 7 times per day into every room throughout your entire space. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants within the duct work. In a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living.

Air Duct System Cleaning

Think of it this way: Your heating and cooling system acts as the lungs of your home. The system breathes air in and breathes air out.

Contaminates Cause Indoor Air Pollution

Although you can’t always see them, these contaminates cause indoor air pollution and may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune diseases and some environmental allergies.

Our technologies will allow you see what is happening before and after your air duct system cleaning; with Aeroduct Vision our technicians will guide you through your own air duct system, while you sit back and watch on a remote tablet. This system is will give you the insight no other company provides, results you can see!

According to the EPA on average, Americans spend about 90% or more of their time indoors and indoor levels of pollutants are occasionally more than 100 times higher than outdoor levels. Now you can see how your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is important, and having a clean, properly functioning heating and cooling (HVAC) system is vital to maintaining a clean healthy and comfortable indoor environment.

Cleaning your HVAC system has several benefits not only for the quality of the indoor air, but for the efficiency of the system itself.

Energy Usage

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25% to 40% of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the HVAC system such as dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other airborne contaminants cause it to work harder and shortens the life of your system. Although filters are used, your HVAC system still gets contaminated with micro dust through normal everyday use which can cause dirt and debris to get trapped within your Air Duct system and should be removed regularly.

When an Air Duct system is cleaned correctly, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to an improved cost-effective budget. If you decide to have your Air Duct system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider is qualified.

Wiz Team performs Air Duct Cleaning Services in accordance with NADCA Standards. Your Air Duct System or HVAC consists of everything that heats, cools, humidifies, dehumidifies, filters and distributes the air. The visible components of the system are the return air grilles and supply registers. The mostly hidden components are return and supply ducts, air handling units and all their parts such as main trunks, drain pans, fans, filters, humidifiers and reheating coils. All of these components provide a lot of growing room for microbes. Only a thorough cleaning of all the components can ensure maximum benefits.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer Vent Cleaning is an important part of your home maintenance and fire prevention. Dryer vent cleaning may not seem like a priority, but the truth of the matter is that this oversight can be very costly. It is estimated that approximately 15,600 fires are associated with clothes dryers per year. Fires can occur when lint builds up in the dryer or in the exhaust duct blocking air flow, causing excessive heat build-up.

Recent industry studies have shown that an excessive amount of lint in the dryer vent may add an additional $15-$25 per month to your electric bill, which is about $300 a year in unnecessary energy cost. Typical dryer vent cleaning services cost less than $300, so it just makes sense to follow the manufacturer recommendations and have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year.

If you have not had your dryer vent cleaned in the past 12 months, Call us Today, you’ll be glad you did!

This video below (produced and aired by NBC’s Today Show) will give you some basics of what you need to know about dryer vent cleaning.

Good Health Starts at Home

One of the most important environmental health hazards is often overlooked in the pursuit of good health.  Good air quality in the home is critical for residents to feel their best. After all, everyone in a home shares the same air for extended periods of time.  Bad indoor air quality is one of the top five environmental risks to public health

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems

Allergens and bacteria can build up in the home’s heating and air conditioning system and ductwork, creating a serious air quality problem.  If someone is sick in the home, air pollutants from the illness will circulate throughout the home. These germs can continue to recirculate unless a good filter is able to capture them from the air.  Mold, allergens, dust, pollen, and occasionally unwelcome animals like mice and squirrels can get into the ductwork, creating very poor indoor air quality. Call Wiz Clean to come and clean your air ducts.

Other Indoor Air Quality Contributors

Dryer vents need to be clear.  Air from the dryer, often containing lint and chemicals from detergents and dryer sheets, should have a clear passage to the out-of-doors.  Allowing this air to enter a home can contribute to indoor pollution and poor health.  One university study even terms air from the dryer as toxic

Take Charge of Good Health

Maintaining indoor air quality is not difficult, it just takes a little extra consideration.  Think through all the ways that air enters and exits the home; then make sure each air path is clean and clear. Poor air quality contributes to allergies, asthma, respiratory infections, and bronchitis. No one has time for that. Clean up your in-home air today with Wiz Clean.

It is a known fact that every homeowner should consider having their ducts and vents cleaned on a regular basis. However,One thing that is sometimes overlooked is the processes and systems that are used to actually clean ducting systems. While many companies use harsh and corrosive and even toxic chemicals other companies is to use more environmentally friendly methods and products. It wasn’t until we moved into our new home that we learned that you could have your home’s air ducts professionally cleaned! Who knew? I seriously thought you could just use your vacuum cleaner to do this type of job. I know… I have much to learn about homeownership – and life, in general. But anytime there’s a chance to pay someone to do house work, I’m in!

This was actually recommended by our real estate agent and the home inspector, because our home is a flipped home that was recently completely renovated. So, there were LOTS of dust and debris in the HVAC system and ducts.

But, before you pick up the phone to schedule a professional visit, make sure you do a bit of research. You may not have to clean your home’s air ducts at all, or at least you may find that it’s not as urgent as you thought it was.

Some people are under the impression that they MUST get their home’s air ducts professionally cleaned to help reduce allergies and improve their HVAC system’s efficacy. While doing this type of cleaning may help, there really isn’t scientific evidence to prove it. According, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Studies also fail to conclusively demonstrate that dust levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. In fact, dirt and other pollutants can enter your home from outdoor cooking, cleaning, smoking, etc. So, in other words, you’ll always have at least some dust/dirt in your home’s ducts. (I know. Gross!)

“Ok. So does this mean I don’t have to do this? Ever?”

Not quite true.  You could pay someone to get your home’s air ducts cleaned if it gives you peace of mind. However, you should definitely do it if you’re in one of the following situations:

  • There’s visible mold growth inside ducts or other HVAC components.
  • There are excessive amounts of dust or dirt. This could happen after having remodeling work done, like in our situation, for example.
  • There are insects or other small animals calling your air ducts their home. If this is the case, you may have to call an exterminator as well.

“What about cleaning air ducts to increase the HVAC efficacy? Is this true?”

Well, according to some homeowners’ anecdotal experiences and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), air duct cleaning does help. Some people have seen a “significant improvement in air flow and air quality” after having their air ducts and HVAC components cleaned, reducing their energy bills. The NADCA recommends cleaning them every three to five years to maximize your HVAC system’s life.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Air Duct Cleaning Service Provider

According to the EPA website, here are the things your service provider should do when cleaning your home’s ducts:

  • Open access ports or doors to allow the entire system to be cleaned and inspected.
  • Inspect the system before cleaning to be sure that there are no asbestos-containing materials in the HVAC system. If asbestos is present, a special cleaning must be done.
  • Use HEPA (high-efficiency particle air) vacuuming equipment if the vacuum exhausts inside the home. Otherwise, use equipment that exhausts outside of the home.
  • Protect carpet and furnishing during cleaning.
  • Use well-controlled brushing of duct surfaces in conjunction with contact vacuum cleaning.
  • Use only soft-bristled brushes for fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Take care to protect ductwork, including sealing and re-insulating any access holes so they’re airtight.
  • Follow NADCA’s standards for air duct cleaning and NAIMA’s recommended practice for ducts containing fiberglass or constructed of fiberglass duct board.

By removing contaminants from a home’s air duct system, the effects of dust and mold are greatly reduced. Clean, healthy, circulating air is a must for those sensitive to indoor air contaminants, especially with allergies being at an all-time high in America. It is not unusual for a person to realize immediate relief upon completing a cleaning of a home’s HVAC ductwork.

Here are the top five reasons air ducts should be inspected and serviced:

  1. Allergies. By properly cleaning their air duct system homeowners protect their families from harmful dust and other contaminants. Air ducts provide an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, mold, fungi, and other allergens.  Children under the age of four are particularly vulnerable and the result may be allergies or asthma.  Seattle Healthy Projects reports, “New research indicates if children do not come into contact with asthma triggers between birth and four years old they may never develop asthma.”
  2. Mold.  Many air duct systems are located in a home’s basement.  Most have had a wet, damp, or flooded basement in the past. This moisture may cause mold and mildew to grow in and around the ductwork.  An anti-microbial should be fogged into the system after the cleaning to prevent future growth.
  3. Pets.  Animal fur gets trapped in the vents and builds up living germs, fungus, and allergy-causing bacteria. Pet dander will still exist from a previous owner and will cause reactions for people with allergies. The fur and dander can also hinder the efficiency of the HVAC system. Clumps of hair will slow down the airflow for the entire system.
  4. Dust.  New homeowners may do constant dusting only to find the dust back the very next day. The reason is the dust continues to flow through the house and ductwork until it is properly cleaned.  Homes built today will have drywall dust and construction debris in the ductwork before the owner even moves in.
  5. Efficiency.  Years of dust, hair, pests, and other pollutants in ductwork will hinder an HVAC system’s airflow.  A proper cleaning will help remove the buildup and promote the proper airflow needed to run the system at peak efficiency. The spiders, insects, and rodents that have been living and dying in ducts for years will be cleaned out as well from a thorough cleaning.

When dirt and debris are removed from ductwork, the fans and motors that power a furnace no longer need to work as hard to distribute air. Advising people to routinely get their air ducts inspected and serviced is important. Not only does this properly maintain a home, but it keeps the quality of indoor air as pure as possible.
